Opening wallet in Bitcoin core crashes the programme
So as the title says I can't open a wallet in Bitcoin core. I can do everything else. I've made wallets, encrypted them, closed them etc, it all works. I can access settings and help/about pages and I can browse the rest of the menu options no problem. But the moment I hover the cursor over the "open wallet" drop down menu, (file - open wallet ➡️) the whole programme freezes and I have to force close with task manager. I can switch wallets using the option towards the top right of the main window after I've made them but after having to force close Bitcoin core, the wallets I made are not an option on that top right area but if I try to make a wallet with the same name and passphrases, the programme says it already exists and tries to create it, but never does. I'm on a normal PC with a 1tb hdd. Nothing special, just wanted to be part of the network and run a full node. I'm a novice clearly and might have missed something important. My wallets have 0 balance. Anyone know what's up? I can't find this specific problem online. Closest I found was someone saying the hardware wasn't good enough but the hardware does everything else so am confused as to why opening a wallet would be beyond it. Many thanks and sorry for not being competent, ha!
So this has happened 3 times in the past few months. Everything was fine in January but this past month I've gotten the 'Error loading block database. Do you want to rebuild the block database now?' message and had to download/reindex everything. It failed last week and it failed again last night after 2-3 days of downloading (noisily). Seems to be a problem with blk00706 for me. Any ideas what's going on? Anyone else experiencing this same problem? I have plenty of hard drive space left, about 50GB. Is the blockchain downloadable separately so that I can troubleshoot this mess, such as in an updated torrent file?
I can't find the debug log on my macbook air Can someone tell me why this is happening? I have the 2013 version of macbook air and I have $7.50 on the wallet I cant find debug.log too Is there any way to get my priv key while this is happening?
Once Bitcoin core truly fails, why would Bitcoin cash take its place?
A lot of people here seem to be under the assumption that there is an eitheor relationship between bitcoin core/bitcoin cash. The prophesied flippening is probably the best example of this. A flippening might happen with hashingpower, because the same asics run bitcoin core and bitcoin cash. But I think more likely we will see a real crypto winter if bitcoin core crashes. Most of the asics will be turned of because the cost of electricity won't motivate the mining and miners will have a hard time getting credits. Remember when bitcoin core goes down it usually brings all alt-coins down with it, so we would probably see a lot of value dissapear, even if bitcoin cores market cap has been decreasing over time. A lot has happened since satoshis paper was published. Challenges, like scaling, ploitics and privacy, that were not apparent before has been shown and a lot of new innovation has happened in the space. More will come in the future. I believe more mature protocols will have advantages over any fork of bitcoin after a crypto winter. They don't have negative branding that bitcoin will have gotten by then and they are not burdened by technical legacy. CMV!
"The bitcoin [core] crowd is upset at me for stating facts. I warned everyone who was listening before the Black Thursday crash. Multiple times. Most were too busy looking at nonsensical models predicting how wealthy they would soon be. Go ahead, shoot the messenger."
"Bitcoin [Core] still crashing. It is because of a) reevluation of economic fundamentals in the light of economic growth estimates, b) a technical adjustment in response to changes in leveraged positions or c) rampant manipulation of a thin and opaque market?"
Has there been any other commodity in history that has exploded in price like btc without its being a bubble?
I’m going to try to be fair to btc / /bitcoin by stating their side as I understand it: their talk of bitcoin as a store of value is probably predicated on future utility (i.e., actual use as currency when 2nd layer solutions finally come online). Also, bitcoin is unlike any other commodity in history, in that it is highly divisible and inflation resistant. That, I believe, is the reason it’s so frequently able to bounce back from its occasional crashes. No matter how much of it you have, that amount has utility. If you’re using it as a medium of exchange, you can buy it close to your time of purchase and it won’t significantly lose its utility as “magic internet money” before your purchase goes through. But it feels different this time. As much as /btc feels like a bubble, I agree wholeheartedly with the philosophy of bitcoin cash. And the message is starting to get through. If bitcoin core crashes hard enough, bitcoin cash ought to overtake it permanently. (Unless the real world is too-little a fairy-tale where right always wins. If you steep yourself deeply enough into Core’s propaganda, it’s astonishing just how effective it really does seem to be). So is bitcoin fundamentally unprecedented, or has anything else risen in price this much so quickly? Oil, perhaps? Except oil had immediate, obvious utility. Tobacco? I’m not sure how quickly its popularity grew, and it too had obvious utility (albeit one that people had to be sold on).
I'll preface this post by saying that I understand very little about Bitcoin and was hoping for a fast, painless money transfer. Clearly I was wrong. I recently decided to withdraw a significant amount of money from a website that would only export funds via Bitcoin. After doing the minimal amount of research, I downloaded Bitcoin Core, opened it (choosing to save the data to my startup disk), exported a "receiving address" and initiated the transfer on the website. I thought that I was all set. When I saw that the money had been withdrawn from the website, I went to check my Bitcoin Core wallet and I saw that it had crashed because I didn't have enough disk space to synchronize the blockchain. I am now trying to change the storage path to my external hard drive, but cannot figure out how to save the blockchain data to the hard drive instead of my startup disk. Each time I open Bitcoin Core, it crashes again because of the low startup disk space. I have the "receiving address" on hand but I am afraid that I will lose this money. I suppose I can boil my problems down into a handful of fundamental questions:
Can I save the Blockchain data to an external hard drive?
If I initiated a Bitcoin transfer and my Bitcoin Core crashed, will I still receive the payment?
How can I retrieve my funds if I have to uninstall/reinstall Bitcoin Core?
As you can likely tell, I'm woefully confused and disoriented with the whole Bitcoin system. When you're not acclimated to all of the technical jargon, looking up solutions can only complicate your understanding of everything. If anyone could help a beginner out, I would be tremendously grateful.
